The weekend before i left for china I went on this "epic" (debatable term) mountain bike ride through the mountains east of LA at a pretty good elevation... it was so fun but a lot of big drops down the mountain and i still have scabs from scratchy stuff that cut me up.. dan got some poison ivy or oak stuff on him too (for whatever reason it never has caused a reaction in me)
i just saw this picture and suddenly really wish i had my bike here!

In this picture i'm on the bund (its all britishy) and across the river is pudong where the pearl of the orient building is located...

Fwd: hangzhou and the eclipse

I'm in Beijing, i got in on a train from shanghai this morning.. beijing feels a lot like la.. its sort of creepy that way. Wide streets, starbucks, lots of people speaking in languages i dont understand, lots of food. But i haven't seen much yet so its probably the area i'm in. Facebook is blocked now the last VPN site one of my friends used is now blocked as of this morning..

In this picture im staring at the sun as it went into a total eclipse. I was in one of the only places where you could see the sun during the entire eclipse. I went to the city of hangzhou (china calls it heaven on earth) and up their version of a mountain, called jade emperor hill, to a buddhist temple and watched the eclipse from there... it was amazing..

Shanghai is a fun city and very easy to get around on subway or walking.. it was just very hot the first few days

Dan and greg, my husband and bro-in-law, are feeling a bit sick. I've been eating random stuff from all over town and have thankfully stayed healthy. I think all my randomly trying stuff i happen upon on hikes that looks edible has paid off.

I hope i can get a bike tomorrow to get around town traveling in subways means its hard to get a good view of stuff.

I'm going to Goldstone tomorrow to see the huge huge deep space network satellite dishes.
Goldstone is about 35 miles north of Barstow.

Dan is leaving for Japan tomorrow morning so I have to get up at 4 something to take him to the Burbank airport then meet people at work for the drive out.
Yesterday i went to an alumni fundraiser thing for MIT and got a nerdy shirt and a lychee cocktail. The last two work days i was at Caltech at a review for a project called NuStar. They are trying to find the next Korn in space.
I also went to a new hire lunch at Caltech and got a tour of the campus and free food. A very nerdy tour.
Monday I went up brown mountain saddle and down el preito on my bike, sunday i went to cherry canyon on my bike. It had a nice view of glendale. I wonder i the mountains over burbank have trails.
I really hope i run into Conan soon.

My grandfather, and uncle, and all sorts of people back in time are named john elliot or john elliot bowles..

This bible was translated by John Ellliot in 1685 at Cambridge Mass. I'd heard of this bible as a vague sort of family story but the actual bible is real and one is in pasadena, ca of all places.

I've walked by it a few times before but figured it ws just a coincidence then my mom saw it a couple weeks ago and got all excited.

Friday - amazing vegeterian chinese restaurant in alhambra (i think). Very rude service very good food. I think i sorta understood a few words employees were saying. Still haven't tried their vegeterian sharks fin.

Sat - Early morning headed to mountain bike on Backbone trail in malibu creek state park. It was a long wonderful ride. The terrain was foggy, hilly, full of flowers, glistening spider webs, delicious smelling chapparel. Occasionally trails led to crazy huge houses. So foggy it was hard to tell we were super high. Very disorienting.
Got back to the car around 2 and went to fancy el pollo loco. The sun came out. Headed towards point dume/ zuma beach. There was some sort of music festival on the way and a garage sale at a mansion. Seals, dolphins, pelicans, waves. Rock climbing on cliffs (not by me).
Slight nap.
Late showing of Up in 3D at paseo colorado in Pasadena with Dan and Will. I thought 3D added value. Not everyone seemed to agree with me. I snuck in food from a mexican restaurant.

Sunday - woke up feeling sort of sick so cleaned the place. Later went back to point dume with dan and met up with Will and tried out swimming with a wet suit. I was scared b/c the current was so strong and the shore dropped off really fast. A seal came close to inspect me. Pelicans dove into the water all around me. Dorsal fins of dolphins popping up close by. I basically couldn't do anything b/c the waves were so strong so i bobbed up and down alternating between amazed and frightened. Afterwards we got ethiopian food at little ethiopia on fairfax in downtown LA.

Tonight i'm going to watch conan on hulu!

I got tickets to china for 2 weeks at the end of july.
Longest solar eclipse in my lifetime will happen there!
Highschool friend happens to be there too!

Dan working at Caltech doing astrophysics stuff and going to Japan for a conference in a couple weeks. He is and going to start at UC Riverside for astrophysics in fall.

Lots of good food in Pasadena. My job is taking a strange turn working on flight projects instead of radiation lately.

I got a wet suit, I plan to play in the ocean this weekend. I dont know how to surf so i'll probably just dorkily splash around.

My sister was in Europe for a month and now is starting a 2 year job at Humboldt County as a social worker. She was served a subpeona for stuff at another social work job and was all excited that she had a real life server track her down and deliver it :)

My brother has been trying to finish course work up at SDSU and trying to get research done near Palmdale looking at faults and gravity and ground resistance. Hes a geology major. He is in portland today and going to collect supplies for an awesome summer getting data around yellowstone. He will likely be in santa fe for a bit at geophysics camp. Maybe he will go to Antarctica in the fall.
